Intoxicatingly Romantic Perfume Buttons…These sew-on delicacies were of two-part construction with an open-work face mounted upon a metal backing. Sandwiched in the middle was a fabric disc most commonly of velvet. Drops of fragrance were applied to these buttons to emanate the scent while sparing the gown of oil staining.
But here is the best part. During the Civil War, it was common practice for a woman to sew her heavily perfumed button inside the cuff or collar of her lover’s or son’s uniform sleeve. While in the trenches, he could raise his wrist to his nose and find comfort.
I have gathered from my personal collection, six of these treasures (in great condition) along with other antique buttons, to create this perfume button bracelet. Swoon.
