The use of shells as purses mainly dates from the end of the 19th century, when the Victorians love of the natural world and passion for collecting seashells coincided with the middle classes being able to take holidays to seaside resorts . They often wished to take back souvenirs of their excursions, and shell purses were one of many items produced by entrepreneurial shopkeepers. The writing of “souvenir from …” is long gone, but you can see traces of some hand painted flowers. This is the first time I have acquired one in this shell design. Usually the shell is applied to a purse frame…This is an instance where the actual shell was used as the purse!
